San Diego women lose to Wake Forest in NCAA

IRVINE, Calif. - Despite being the better team on the field, the University of San Diego women's soccer team dropped a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to Wake Forest University Friday evening in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at Anteater Stadium.
With the loss, the Toreros conclude the season with a 11-8-2 overall record and the Demon Decond improve to 13-7-3 overall and will advance on to play the winner of the UC Irvine and Arizona match later this evening.
Wake Forest scored the matches lone goal in the 65th minute of play, as the Toreros committed a foul just outside the goal box to set up a free kick for the Demon Decons. WFU's Katie Stengel took a free kick and was able to slip it over the Torero defense and past a diving Courtney Parsons to take a 1-0 lead.
San Diego had a great opportunity to tie things up in the final seconds as Wake Forest committed a foul about 30 yards out. Elissa Magracia then took the free kick and the ball bounced around a bit in the goal box, before Addie Cartan broke through and headed the ball about two yards out at the lower right corner, but Wake Forest's keeper was able to save the ball, preserving the win for the Demon Decons.
USD had another great scoring opportunity come in the 30th minute of action, as Stephanie Ochs took a run down the right side and sent a cross to Taylor Housley who hit a one-timer that just went over the top of the cross bar.
In the second half, San Diego had a good look early as in the 50th minute, Ochs crossed the ball to Jackie Zinke, who headed the ball from three yards out, but the ball went wide.
USD outshot the Demon Decons 8-6 and held a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Parsons was saddled with the loss in goal for the Toreros, as she allowed one goal and recorded three saves. Her counterpart, Aubrey Bledsoe picked up the win allowing no goals and recording three saves.
