Parents’ Blog: Camptown Days
One of the interesting things is when you arrive at the college camp you have no idea who will be there. At least that was our experience. Sure enough plenty of familiar faces. Girls on her club team, other club teams, her ODP team and surrounding states .
All of them are just as happy to see your child as she is of them. She made a few new friends from other states at a previous camp she attended this summer that had to flyback into town.
Some girls obviously made plans to be together in a group. ODP Camp or college camp for them was a giant sleep over. Taking silly pictures of each other, texting and staying up late. Not to mention the poor eating habits of some of them with tons of candy and junk food in the dorm rooms to “party” with.
Maturity level was surprisingly low for some of these girls. They even brought stuffed animals and dress-up clothes, now we are talking about incoming juniors! It was just another week away from home and hanging with friends. I could see their chaperon fooling right along with them, like she was one of the girls (Reminded me of the “cool mom” from the Mean Girls movie! Not my idea of a chaperon). But maybe that is all they wanted. Those girls didn’t seem to care. Not surprisingly, they did not perform as well.
Others of course are stressed and wanting to get put into the pool or be picked for the all-star team at the college camp. They are girls that arrive with the intent to learn and be seen. Some make the pool or team and some do not. I make sure to congratulate all of the girls for the hard work and effort. The ones that got chosen and made the pool or all-star team worked hard and it paid off.
You tend to get out of it what you put in.
