DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke women's soccer team held its annual team banquet this week to officially wrap up the very successful 2007 campaign, which saw the Blue Devils advance to the NCAA College Cup quarterfinals.
A total of six awards were given out on the evening including Newcomer of the Year, Most Inspirational Player, Coaches Awards, Most Outstanding Offensive Player, Most Outstanding Defensive Player and Most Valuable Player. All awards except for the Coach Award were voted on by the student-athletes.
Taking home both the Most Valuable Player and Most Outstanding Defensive Player was senior Alison Lipsher. A goalkeeper from Honolulu, Hawaii, Lipsher saw action in all 23 games for the Blue Devils. She was one of the top goalkeepers in the country with seven shutouts, a 0.84 goals-against average and 91 saves. In the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) stats, Lipsher ranked fourth in shutouts per game (0.30), fifth in goals-against average (0.84) and fifth in saves per game (3.96).
Elisabeth Redmond, who is a sophomore from Morristown, N.J., was named Most Outstanding Offensive Player, after starting all 23 contests. She lead the Blue Devils in goals (8), assists (12) and points (28) and also notched a team-best four game-winning goals. Her 12 assists ranked second in the ACC stats, while her eight goals ranked tied for seventh. Redmond also ranked sixth with a 1.22 points per game average.
Earning the Most Inspirational Player was senior Andrea Crane, who returned to the Duke roster in 2007 after studying abroad at the University of Slazburg in 2006. In her final year, Crane appeared in five contests and started senior night during a 4-2 win against Miami.
Freshman Gretchen Miller was named the Newcomer of the Year, after starting all 23 contests in her first year as a Blue Devil. Miller, who is from Fairport, N.Y., played a total of 1,917 minutes and scored one goal in a 6-0 victory over Elon.
Receiving the Coaches Awards were junior's Kelly McCann and Lorraine Quinn. McCann, who is from Carlsbad, Calif., started all 23 matches and posted three assists from the defensive end. A native of Farmingdale, N.Y., Quinn also started all 23 contests, while totaling four goals, three assists and 11 points. The midfielder also was named Soccer Buzz All-America and Soccer America MVP Accolades.
As a team, Duke registered a 10-6-7 overall record and advanced to the NCAA College Cup quarterfinals before falling to 12th-ranked Notre Dame, 3-2, in South Bend, Ind.
