DURHAM, N.C.- Duke Women's Soccer Head Coach Robbie Church announced on Wednesday that rising seniors Kelly Hathorn and Kelly McCann have been named captains for the 2008 campaign, after a vote of the team members.

"We are very happy to have both Kelly Hathorn and Kelly McCann voted as our captains for the 2008 season," said Church.  "Both will do a great job leading us on and off the field in different activities.  Each of them have different leadership styles and I think they will compliment each other well.  We will also rely heavily on our senior class.  In that class, we have a lot of strong personalities and talented players that have played for us for four years.  As we go forward, we will rely on both Kelly and Kelly as well as our senior class to provide leadership for our team in 2008."

Hathorn, who is a native of Durham, N.C., moved to the offensive end of the field as a junior, after playing mostly on the defensive unit her first two years.  She went on to notch six goals and five assists for a total of 17 points, after collecting zero goals and one assist in 39 matches as a freshman and sophomore.  The 5-9 forward tallied six goals in 2007 to second on the Duke squad, while her 17 points was third.

As a junior, Hathorn registered goals against 12th-ranked Notre Dame, 25th-ranked Miami, Virginia Tech, Elon and two versus San Francisco.  Her goal against Virginia Tech came in the 103rd minute during the second overtime to push the Blue Devils past the Hokies, 1-0.

A product of Carlsbad, Calif., McCann moved into the starting lineup as a junior and logged over 2,000 minutes on the defensive end for the Blue Devils.  In 23 starts, McCann registered three assists on the year, including the assist on the game-winning goal in a 1-0 victory over 13th-ranked Georgia in the second round of the NCAA College Cup.

A 5-7 defender, McCann helped guide the Duke defensive unit to nine shutouts and a 0.85 goals-against average in 2007.  McCann has helped lead the Blue Devil defense to 29 shutouts over her three years.

As a team, Duke registered a 10-6-7 overall record in 2007 and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA College Cup, before falling to 12th-ranked Notre Dame, 3-2, in Notre Dame, Ind.

Losing only two seniors - Allison Lipsher and Andrea Crane - Duke will feature nine returning starters in 2008, while welcoming another stellar recruiting class.

The Blue Devils will feature some of the best depth they have had in a long time at every position in 2008, which includes 10 players who scored at least one goal from last season. Duke's defensive line headed by McCann, Christie McDonald, Sara Murphy, Gretchen Miller, Sheila Kramer and Meaghan FitzGerald will return after guiding Duke to nine shutouts. Among the other returning starters for the Blue Devils include leading scorer Elisabeth Redmond, All-America Lorraine Quinn, Hathorn, Kendall Bradley and Jane Alukonis.
