WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - No. 1 Wake Forest used a pair of goals in both halves to defeat the UMass men's soccer team 2-0 on Tuesday night at Spry Stadium. The Minutemen played strong defense holding the nation's top offensive scoring team to just two goals. Ben Arikian nearly cut the lead to just one goal in the 83rd minute with a penalty kick that deflected wide off the right post.
The Demon Deacons improve to a school-record 11-0-0 and extend their non-conference win streak to 36 games. Additionally, WFU won its 16th straight game, the longest in school history, and a 28-game home unbeaten streak which is the eighth longest streak in NCAA history.
UMass (2-5-2) held Wake Forest scoreless for the first 35 minutes of play. Sam Cronin scored off a corner kick in the 35th minute when he knocked home a rebound from Ike opara after Corben Bone served the ball towards the back right post.
In the second half, Cody Arnoux scored his sixth goal of the season in the 51st minute when he put a foot on a cross from Lyle Adams redirecting the ball past UMass keeper Zack Simmons. Zack Schilawski played a long pass down the left flank of the 18-yard box where Adams sent a diagonal pass towards the middle of the six-yard box for Arnoux. Simmons got a piece of Arnoux's shot with his forearm, but the shot had enough steam to trickle in the goal.
The Minutemen had their best shot at scoring when a yellow card was issued to Wake's Danny Wenzel inside the six-yard box on a UMass corner kick in the 82nd minute. The foul gave UMass a penalty kick which Arikian put in play. The shot, however, went right and glanced off the right goal post.
Wake totaled 19 shots to just seven for UMass. The Minutemen were able to keep the Demon Deacons to taking 10 of those shots outside of the 18-yard box. The Demon Deacons also held a 6-to-2 edge in corner kicks.
Averaging a nation-best 3.60 goals per game, UMass held Wake Forest to under three goals for just the third time this season and the first time in four games. The Minutemen defense also held Marcus Tracey, the seven leading scorer in the country, to no points in the game.
The Minutemen will face Rhode Island on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. in Kingston, R.I., to begin Atlantic 10 play. It will be the second game of UMass' four-game road trip.
