CONCORD, MA – The 2nd day of pool play at the U14 Boys National Team ID camp brought an improved brand of soccer, even though area thunderstorms prevented the 2nd half of the final match from being played.

Head Coach Manny Schellscheidt and his staff will be pleased with the improved level of teamwork on display both in the pool match and the two interregional contests played Thursday at Middlesex Prep.Image

Following are some of the top performances I noticed, along with full lineups of the matches.

Team 5 vs. Team 6
Diego Fagundez continues to be the standout player of the camp. He provided another highlight in the early going by volleying an incoming pass over a defender and to himself, after which he struck a shot with fury to score the game's opening goal.

Jordan Allen of Rochester Junior Rhinos has very quick feet and good close control. Goalkeeper Joseph Ghitis of West Pines United (FL) again demonstrates he is alert at coming off his line and makes smart decisions. Weston, FL forward Ismael Longo played a good through pass for Paul Arrioloa of Chula Vista Rangers, who finished well to make it 1-1.

Dix Hills, NY fullback Dylan Greenberg is a very hard worker and is also very smart positionally. He covers well and won a number of tackles in the back. Jacob Smith of Concorde Fire in Atlanta continues to have a good camp and punctuated this by lashing home a shot from inside the area before the half-time whistle and the threat of lightning brought the contest to a close.

Region II vs. Region IV
A player I really liked in this game was Evansville, IN forward Travis Wannemueller, #55. He has some athletic ability to be sure, but his strength seems to come with his brain, eyes and feet. He controls the ball well, sees his teammates runs well and has the skill to deliver the ball with pace and accuracy. He also showed he can finish with his head on the game's opening goal.

Real Colorado goalkeeper Ethan Horvath was getting hung out to dry on a regular basis by his defense, but he managed to produce a couple of highlight-reel saves, showing off his quick reflexes. California forwards Kevin Labastida and Andrew Perez are strong on the ball, while Owensboro, KY's Luke Stauffer is a talented passer of the ball.

Region I vs. Region III
Massachusetts forward Christian Sady scored one of the better goals of the week, lashing home a drive from the edge of the area. FC Barcelona goalkeeper Kevin Paredes showed bravery and good reflexes in making some close range saves (some players were moved to a new region to keep the teams balanced after pool selection). South Texas standout Reyes Espino showed good ability to run with the ball and good finishing in recording a hat trick. Ashburn, VA's Justin Burrell was also a force to be reckoned with in the offensive third.

The teams were scheduled to complete the pool match Friday morning and play three final matches Friday afternoon, before the boys and coaches return home.
