Dynamic midfield duo named High School POTW

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (April 3, 2013) - Haley Westervelt, a sophomore midfielder from Central Davidson High School (Lexington, N.C.) and Erik Clark, a senior midfielder from Wando High School (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) have been selected as the NSCAA/TopDrawerSoccer.com High School Players of the Week.

Westervelt is a key contributor to Central Davidson’s 9-1-1 record, the best start in school history. She scored eight goals and registered six assists in the Spartans’ last four games. Central Davidson outscored their opponents 23-2 during this stretch and the sophomore midfielder leads the team with 16 goals and 14 assists.

Westervelt is also excelling in the classroom where she is ranked in the top ten percentile of her class. Westervelt’s head coach, Chad Hench, described her as a player who keeps opponents on their heels and highlighted her ability to take over a game.

“She is small in stature and usually marked tightly and physically by our opponents, but still manages to make the plays when needed,” Hench said.

Other female finalist included Jordan Reina from Person High School (Roxboro, N.C.).

Clark registered a season-high four assists in a 5-1 victory over Summerville High School. The senior midfielder continued to pick defenses apart as he registered two more assists in a 4-1 victory over Hoover High School.

Clark has committed to play for the College of Charleston, under head coach and NSCAA member, Ralph Lundy, this fall.

The NSCAA/TopDrawerSoccer.com High School Player of the Week program is designed to highlight the future stars of the game. Anyone can nominate a player, however only players whose coach is a current NSCAA member are eligible for selection. Honorees will be announced on Wednesdays.

The next submission deadline is Monday, April 8, followed by the April 10, announcement.
