High school soccer was supposed to kick off this week in Virginia, but that might get put on hold.

The region is expecting a snow storm that could dump 12 inches of snow in parts of the state. The storm is part of a front that has rolled through the Midwest and is hitting the East starting Tuesday. 

Regions south of Virginia should be sparred any bad weather from this winter event, which is good news for the Smoky Mountain Cup in Gatlinburg, Tenn., which runs Thursday through Sunday. Four SIMA FAB 50-ranked boys programs and one regionally ranked team highlight the participants in this year's event, the first of two. Smoky Mountain Cup organizers divided the competition into two weeks this year to accommodate more teams. 

Overall, there was not much movement in either the boys or girls SIMA FAB 50 rankings as most teams have yet to start regular season play.

WINTER RANKINGS

NEWS: The California high school season drew to a close over the weekend, and a slew of first-round surprises in the Southern California Regional Division I tournament led to a few new faces joining the rankings in both boys and girls soccer. After this week, all future winter play for the 2017 season will be in Texas.

BIG MOVERS: BOYS: Paramount (Calif.). Paramount moved from No. 29 to No. 13 this week after winning the Southern California Regional Division I tournament. ... GIRLS: Moorpark (Calif.). It took 91 years before Moorpark won a section title, and in a matter of a week it won both section and Southern California Regional crowns. The victories helped Moorpark vault from No. 35 to No. 19 this week.

NEWCOMERS: BOYS: No. 33 Cosumnes Oaks (Elk Grove, Calif.), No. 45 Southlake Carroll (Southlake Texas), No. 47 Dobie (Houston, Texas) and No. 48 Naaman Forest (Garland, Texas). ... GIRLS: No. 30 Huntington Beach (Calif.), No. 38 Granada Hills Charter (Granada Hills, Calif.) and No. 40 Bullard (Fresno, Calif.).
