In just about every state, playoffs begin on a local level and ultimately build toward geographical state semifinals and finals.

The unfortunate part of that system in Texas is almost all of the state's legitimate contenders from the Dallas-Fort Worth MetroPlex will lose out long before they they could flex their muscle against non-MetroPlex opponents. One such example was this past week, in the first round of the state's 128-team, single-elimination Class 6A girls tournament when McKinney Boyd (McKinney, Texas) edged Keller (Keller, Texas) in a shootout featuring two teams that have been fixtures in the SIMA FAB 50. Boyd and Keller were a combined 4-0 against non-MetroPlex programs, scoring 17 goals in those matches.

This week, SIMA FAB No. 1 Coppell (Coppell, Texas) is paired with No. 15 Plano West (Plano, Texas) in the state round of 64 for girls soccer. Those teams were 7-0-1 against non-MetroPlex teams with a scoring margin of 23-3, which included wins over a Florida state champion and a California regional champion. The Coppell-Plano West matchup is more fitting a state semifinal tilt instead of an early round district match. But such are the pairings in Texas, and one of these powerhouse programs will see its season come to an end Tuesday night. Meanwhile, several lesser quality programs from the San Antonio, Houston and Austin areas will cruise through the early rounds before seeing any legitimate competition.
