This past weekend’s Lady Eagle Invitational girls soccer event in Zionsville, Ind., was supposed to sort out the national title contenders.

Instead, it did nothing but muddle the picture.

The Midwest-based event featured 13 teams that are or have been in the FAB 50 rankings already this fall, each playing two matches. There ended up being 12 ties among those 26 results, leaving few “big” winners.

By contrast, the McDonogh Invitational in the East and the Washington-Oregon Showcase in the West largely played out as expected.

McDonogh and Good Counsel reinforced their 1-2 standing in Maryland by winning their matches at the McDonogh Invitational. Skyline (Wash.) strengthened its top ranking in the Northwest Region by sweeping a pair of Oregon teams, including Top 20-ranked and defending state champion Tualatin.

In Zionsville, however, Avon (Ind.) went into the event as a Top 10 team and came away with two losses. The big winners in Zionsville were Brebeuf Jesuit (Ind.), Penn (Ind.), Evansville North (Ind.) and Sacred Heart (Ky.), which all came away 2-0. Sacred Heart had the strongest showing, knocking off Medina (Ohio) and Avon, likely re-earning a FAB 50 ranking this week.

On the boys side, there are only state No. 1 changes in Kentucky and Minnesota among the larger fall-playing states.
