How Do I Get Recruited?

Ever ask yourself this question? Almost every player or parent involved in youth soccer asks it rather frequently. I know because I’ve been asked it repeatedly over the past 10 years.  Well now we’re working on the best answer we’ve ever given to the question. The TopDrawerSoccer.com Comprehensive Guide to College Soccer Recruiting will cover all the important issues and questions related to this important subject. We’ll be covering the following:

  1. Financial realities regarding scholarships available at each level of college soccer
  2. What parents and players can do proactively to help themselves be noticed.
  3. How to truly know where your player sits in the recruitment pecking order.
  4. How to set your college targets accurately and realistically.
  5. Handling the communication process with college coaches.
  6. How to manage the end game of scholarship offers
  7. What comes after the commitment/NLI
  8. Much, much more.

As we’re putting this recruiting guide together, we’re consulting with multiple sources including college coaches and families who have successfully navigated the process. I’ve been talking with many of both for the past several years and it always strikes me how quick the learning process has to be, and how great the gap of knowledge is from those who have completed the process to those who are just beginning. That’s why this guide will be so useful to the families of players who are hoping to someday play college soccer.

The Comprehensive Guide to College Soccer Recruiting from TopDrawerSoccer.com will only be available to subscribers to the web site, but in truth, the low subscription rate of between $19.95 to $29.95 per year makes the offer a true bargain for any youth soccer family.

The guide will be available in the coming months, only on TopDrawerSoccer.com

Please put a section on how to decide which colleges to contact. If you aren’t restricted by college major or geographic location, how do you narrow the field and know which schools to reach out to? This is our number one question and the one I can find no answer to, even though I have sought out many opinions. Other questions include:  How do you decide which camps to spend money on/attend and which ones to pass? What’s the best way to find out inside information about the school’s program, style of play. coach personality? How do you stand out from the other hundreds of recruits that are emailing the same college coaches?  But number one: We feel like we are drinking out of a fire hydrant, how do you decide which schools to contact and focus on.

I think I can help you with  a portion of question, without waiting for the answer from TDS.  What area of the country is your soccer player interested in playing- any affinities for certain conferences, be realistic in playing expectations, if your soccer player wants to play, and is off the radar for D-1 schools look at D2 and D3…  Dont discount looking at  private universities (they may have more money to give) and be realistic… My soccer player is across the country playing – we only see 4 games a season- but she is happy with her school choice and could see herself going nowhere else! Initial negotiations should be in percentages of overall costs of attending the college.  Dont accept flat $$$  since in the following year or two you really dont know how much the college will cost.
