Soccer at Fenway?

Apparently management at Fenway Sports is attempting to organize a friendly match between Liverpool and AS Roma at Fenway Park. Both teams be will touring the United States over the summer and Liverpool has made preliminary plans to be in the Boston area from June 20 – July 4. This match seems to make the most sense since the Fenway Sports Group, headed by Red Sox owner John Henry purchased Liverpool in 2010. Other notable names such as LeBron James are also investors of the team. AS Roma is actually also under partial control of Red Sox minority owner Thomas DiBenedetto. Reports say that no date for the match has been set, but just from reading the facts it seems very likely to happen.

Fenway Sports Management president Sam Kennedy:

“Throughout its 100-year history, Fenway Park has seen some of the best athletic competition and while we are exploring the possibility of hosting a Liverpool match – which certainly rises to that level – nothing has been finalized.”

A variety of other teams from Europe will be heading overseas for friendly tournaments in the States. The Liverpool match would be part of tournament involving Chelsea FC and possibly Celtic FC. Chicago and New York are also other likely cities to host games.
