Cover your eyes, this one’s ugly. In what has to be one of the darkest days soccer has ever seen, more than 70 people were killed Wednesday in Egypt after a riot erupted following a match between Egyptian clubs Al-Masry and Al-Ahly.
Be warned, the video is disturbing – this looks like “Braveheart” played out on the pitch. At least 1,000 were injured as home fans swarmed the field in the deadliest incident of soccer violence since 1996. In what was accurately described as “an atmosphere of terrorism,” the outburst of violence is being investigated.
Soccer could use more front page stories, but not at this cost.
