Landon Donovan says he’s 50/50 to play in 2014 World Cup

Written by Jahmal Corner

It could be a big deal or could be nothing more than an aging athlete showing a moment of vulnerability, but Landon Donovan said there’s a 50 percent chance he doesn’t play in the 2014 World Cup. Of course, that also means there’s a 50 percent chance he does, though until Donovan brought this all up we always assumed he would anyway.

The 30-year-old Donovan, who is battling injuries and has played in just eight of 20 matches under Jurgen Klinsmann, dropped the revelation in an interview with ESPN:

“There are a lot of moving pieces: Will I be playing, period? Will I be part of the team? Will I be good enough to be wanted? If I had to guess I would say it is 50-50. I will have more clarity after I take a break.”

It feels like that’s all Donovan’s been doing as of late is taking breaks. Now he’s taking breaks for his breaks.

What strikes me most about Donovan’s comments are his lack of enthusiasm at the prospect of playing. If he’s not juiced about it now, will he be two years from now when he’s a grizzled 32 with fresh new aches and pains?

Who knows? But just in case we never see him in another World Cup let’s relive this after the jump.
