John Stertzer fulfilled a longtime dream recently when he was selected with the No. 12 pick in the MLS Draft. In this exclusive 91st Minute interview, the Maryland standout gives us the scoop on his road leading up to becoming a professional – on and off the field.
When did you first start playing soccer?
JS: I was four when I started playing.
Did you play any other sports growing up?
JS: Yeah, I played a bunch of other sports. I played baseball basketball and football for one year.
Did playing up a level in soccer help prepare you for the next level?
JS: Definitely. I was always the smallest kid out there so I needed to be very skillful in order to compete. Then eventually my size (kicked in).
Who is the best player you played with before college?
JS: Howard Turk (played with Virginia 2008-09).
Who is the best player you played against before college?
JS: Andrew Wenger (Montreal Impact).
When did the thought of the MLS first come to you? Or have you always thought of yourself as a future pro?
JS: When I joined Potomac U15s … that was probably the first time I thought about it. Since then I always wanted to play professionally
What was your most memorable goal of your career, youth or in college?
JS: Probably the goal my sophomore year against Virginia at Virginia. It was my first start of the season and as center mid. I started ever since then.
What was the most memorable game you’ve played in, youth or college?
JS: Most memorable game would have to be last year’s ACC Finals against North Carolina. Great way to leave the ACC.

What is your favorite movie of all time?
JS: Wedding Crashers.
What three songs have to be in your ipod before a game?
JS: I listen to different music before every game. Just leave the iPod on shuffle.
Who is your Hollywood crush?
JS: Mila Kunis.
Would you rather be LeBron James or Tom Brady?
JS: Either. They are both ridiculously successful athletes and the best at what they do.
If you could play Center Midfield with any player in the world for 90 minutes, whom would you play with?
JS: Cesc Fabregas. He’s my favorite player and it would be sick to even be on the same field as him. Maybe one day.
Who was the first person you called after you got drafted?
JS: Didn’t really get a chance to call anyone because so many people were texting me. I guess I was talking to my girlfriend the most.
