Never in his wildest dreams did Louisville’s Andrew Farrell imagine he’d hear his name called first at the Major League Soccer SuperDraft. But that’s the position he found himself in last week when the New England Revolution made him the No. 1 selection.
In Farrell’s exclusive interview with the 91st Minute, he traces his early playing days and tells us what he’d be doing if not for soccer.
When did you first start playing soccer?
AF: I first started playing soccer in Louisville, KY; HYR Soccer, and my mom was my first coach.
Who was your soccer hero growing up?
AF: Jefferson Farfan. He plays at Schalke 04 now in Germany. Also, Alex Song and my brother … I always looked up to him.
What motivates you to be the best?
AF: Growth; I like seeing how I can become better every day and when I see changes it motivates me to work harder.
Did being picked #1 overall ever cross your mind over the past three years?
AF: Haha. Never crossed my mind. I always wanted to get drafted and be a pro because that’s everyone’s dream. (It’s probably my greatest soccer achievement). That, or playing as a freshman in the 2010 College Cup final against Akron.
Farrell reveals the best player he’s played against after the jump.
What aspect of your game do you want to work on the most as you make the transition into the MLS?
AF: Speed of play, tactical positioning, left foot and also one-on-one defending. These are just a few, there are a lot of things that I will learn from the veterans on the Revolution.
Who is the best player you have played against?
AF: There are so many: Nick de Leon, Austin Berry, Kenny walker, Paolo del Piccolo, Colin Rolfe, Greg Cochrane … all the guys at Louisville are good, that’s why I got better because every day I was going against the best in the country.
If you weren’t playing professional soccer, what would you be doing for a living?
AF: I would be either playing music, acting or a standup comedian.
Red Sox, Celtics, Patriots….are you a big fan now?
