Welcome in to another installment of the TDS College Goal of the Week. This week, we’ve got some exciting action from the American Athletic Conference women’s tourney and an incredible juggler’s effort from a Marquette speedster who’s no stranger to this competition.
We start at Rutgers’ Yurcak Field, where the No. 3 seed Scarlet Knights faced the No. 6 seed Cincinnati Bearcats in the quarterfinals of the first ever AAC women’s tourney. Rutgers took a 1-0 lead deep into the second half, but Cincinnati’s Jae Atkinson converted a penalty kick to draw level in the 79th minute. That set the table for an overtime tussle that wasn’t decided until sophomore Rachel Cole nocked in the arrow and let loose from 30 yards for a thrilling double OT winner with just 16 seconds left. The blast itself was impressive enough, but how about the six smooth touches that led up to the shot? That it was a game-winner only increased the curb appeal.
Second, we have Marquette’s C. Nortey, who’s already appeared in the goal of the week competition this year. He was edged by Duke’s Kaitlyn Kerr in late September after connecting on a beautifully taken game-winner against Xavier. He’s back this week with a wonderful solo effort against Seton Hall. Like his last goal on this list, his back-to-the-goal turn-and-fire in the 80th minute off a touch to himself was the decider in a 2-1 win on Senior Night. Lovely.
Can Nortey avenge an earlier defeat? Or will Cole’s wonderfully taken game-winner be the champ this week? Voting closes at 5 p.m. CT on Wednesday (Nov. 6th). Your turn.
