The greatest penalty feint of all time

Written by Will Parchman

American Thomas Dooley coached the Philippines through the AFC Challenge Cup to the finals, which put them on the doorstep of a spot in the AFC Asian Cup, which determines the Confederations Cup participant from Asia. That’s a memorable story for Dooley, who’s at his first full-time international head job.

But this is so much funnier. The Maldives and Afghanistan met in the third-place game on Thursday (Dooley’s Philippines knocked out Afghanistan in the semis), and it was 6-5 in penalties when the Maldives’ Ashad Ali Adubarey stepped up to the spot. Adubarey then pulled off a brilliant move by feinting like a boss and nailing his spot kick for 6-6. The Maldives eventually won 8-7 because of course.
