U.S. U-23 Training Camp Opens Today in Florida

Written by Administrator

The United States U-23 National Team that will represent its country in the 2012 London Olympics will continue to flesh itself out during a training camp in Lakewood Ranch, Fla. from December 15-23. Akron and U23 head coach Caleb Porter will continue to make his evaluations, and decide who he’d like for the 2012 CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying tournament.

The camp will bring together some new blood, in addition to a few players that attended the previous camp held in Germany earlier this fall. A striking number of MLS players have been called into this camp that was lacking in previous camps. A total of 17 players from the MLS will compete this week, with 5 coming from the Philadelphia Union alone. It is also good to note that two college players have been chosen as well, Duke’s Sebastien Ibeagha and Andrew Wenger; the latter considered being one of the top prospects in the upcoming Super Draft.

“At every camp we expect to push the group forward by continuing to evaluate the player pool while imprinting the concepts of how we will play as a team on both sides of the ball,” Porter said in a statement. “As we sort through our personnel and start to hone in on the roster, it is equally as important that the players develop a clear understanding of the culture of how we will do things leading up to our first match in Nashville.”
