It’s time we got The TopDrawerSoccer Show off the ground.

Today marks the official grand opening of The TDS Show for business. We’ve got the placard out on the street, an obnoxious hawker yelling at people to come in and listen, and beaucoup development topics to mull over. Yes folks, it’s finally here.

Believe it or not, the ECNL National Playoffs is bearing down on us. It’s now just two weeks off in Rockford, Ill., and the qualified field from the U14-U19 age ranges is already set. Now we just need the playoff groupings, and we etched those in stone on Thursday night during the ECNL’s live unveil of the draw.

While the U15-U17 ages use this stage as a launch pad to the Finals later in the summer, the U14 and U18 ages will crown champions in Illinois. Which means these groups are of hugely significant importance across the board. And the ECNL streamed the draw, which you can watch in its entirety here. Happy hunting.

It’s Monday, which means blankly staring through your computer screen while TPS Reports cascade onto your desk from on high (I assume my knowledge on the inner-workings of corporate America is sound here).

So why not watch Messi embarrass other humans within whispering range for a while? It’s only right.

SPLIT

Look, being a referee is a rugged life. You’ve got a continual stream of method-questioning coming your way for 90 minutes from players and parents alike, and sometimes you get drilled in the face by an errant ball as a thanks. But at least you get those sweet, sweet penalty calls from time to time?

In any case, one referee at an Iowa Rush game went… in a different direction to avoid an errant ball. Down, notably.

That, friends, is the deck view from the Jordan Morris family home on Mercer Island in the middle of Lake Washington. Not. Bad.

U.S. Soccer today released a video cataloguing the moments before Morris’s first professional match by focusing on both Morris and center back Matt Besler, who was in town for the opener with Sporting KC. Both were named to the preliminary 40-man U.S. roster for the Copa America. Both will almost certainly make the final cut.

While Morris takes you through a quick tour of the palatial home in which he grew up (he has an Everton scarf in his room), Besler takes the customary out-of-towner’s tour through Pike Place Market. He doesn’t exactly go unnoticed – one SKC fan actually pulls out a US Open Cup medal – but he isn’t quite mobbed either.

Anyway, interesting things. Scope it out.

Every year, the Cosmos embarrass somebody on April Fools Day. In 2014, they convinced Peri Marosevic to unwittingly enter an eating contest at Buffalo Wild Wings with international eating champion Takeru Kobayashi. The next year, Alecko Eskandarian got punked by a (very good) young girl in ping pong.

This year, they take it out on the new guys.

The MLS season. It is here.

After a massively disappointing start to 2016 via a CONCACAF Champions League bloodbath at the hands of Liga MX, MLS plunges headlong into the blessed retreat of the 2016 season this weekend. No expansion teams, no excuses. Or, you know, something.

We here at TopDrawerSoccer pay close attention to the young guns, so our MLS preview is a mite different than the rest. In addition to brief breakdowns, we’ll run you through the top U21 players, unsigned Homegrowns, rookies and more for every MLS team. Some need the reinforcement more than others.

Without any more hemming and hawing, let’s dive in.

Signing-Day-Graphic

There are a lot of watershed days for TDS throughout the course of an average year. World Cups. College Cups. Gatorade cups (we run combines, dont’cha know).

Few days, if any, are bigger than National Signing Day. And it’s nearly here.

After a stunning 2-2 draw against Mexico to kick off their U20 World Cup Qualifying campaign, the US met Panama in a must-win match and things got off to an auspicious start as Washington’s Kelcie Hedge knocked in a shot from 30-yards out.

Now, we know what you’re thinking: “that wasn’t intentional and that goalkeeping was hilariously awful.” And you’re 100% right, but goals are goals, so let’s celebrate the good times and the U20s getting their World Cup campaign back on track.

olosunde

Earlier this year we spoke about rumors that U.S. U17 Men’s National Team defender Matt Olosunde was training with Manchester United Academy. Olosunde, a New York Red Bulls Academy product was on the outside looking in during the U17 World Cup, and has been training with the Premier League team on-and-off since early this Summer. While the Red Bulls would certainly like to keep their top prospects in-house, the latest British tabloid reports indicate that Olosunde could make a full-time move overseas as soon as he turns 18.
