For 70 minutes, it looked like the Vancouver Whitecaps were about to knock off the defending MLS Cup champs.

An early goal from former Akron Zip Darren Mattocks looked like it just might stand up as the winner, as the LA Galaxy controlled possession but couldn’t put anything away — that is, until Mike Magee’s tying goal on a nice volley from a corner kick.

That cued the floodgates, more or less, for LA, which scored again just a few minutes later from Landon Donovan’s penalty kick to advance in the playoffs and set up a playoff series against San Jose Earthquakes.

It’s a scientific fact. I submit to you as evidence, Xzibit A (random, I know. But the nostalgia was worth it.)

This kid is going to have a painful few weeks as a reminder. Even so, I’m a glass-half-full kind of guy, and the bright side is he can really jump – you have to give it to him. I’ve seen long jumpers with less talent than this guy, and if they ever make another edition of 3 Ninjas I recommend he go on a casting call.

Even Darren Mattocks is impressed.

Former Akron Zip Darren Mattocks knows how to score goals, as he showed at Akron the past two years.

And after being drafted No. 2 by the Vancouver Whitecaps, Mattocks has overcome an early season injury to now score six goals in nine games thus far.

Check out his latest, an astounding, leaping header to tie the game against Toronto on Wednesday. TFC did come back to score a late winner, however, but Mattocks’ goal is a remarkable display of athleticism.

Former Akron star Darren Mattocks, the second pick in January’s MLS Draft, is reportedly in the hospital after suffering burns during a cooking accident this past weekend.

Mattocks is said to have burns on his right arm and shoulder but Vancouver Whitecaps coach Martin Rennie seemed to indicate to Canadian publication, The Province, that Mattocks’ injuries are not serious.

“I think he’ll be fine. It’s just a setback for him.”

A minor one, we hope. Mattocks is sure to be an impact player in the MLS sooner or later.

Andrew Wenger has been selected as the first pick in the MLS SuperDraft by the expansion Montreal Impact. Wenger was a junior at Duke and played all over the field while at Duke, but was used mostly as a defending midfielder. He definitely did not fall short of accomplishments. Wenger recently won The Hermann Trophy as the top NCAA player and the offensive player of the year in the ACC this year. Following the ceremony, Wenger immediately left the draft in order to join the U23 MNT.

“It’s an honor, but it’s exciting. It’s going to be awesome especially since I’ve never lived in a big city.  We have a lot of potential.”

The Vancouver Whitecaps chose Darren Mattocks as the second pick in the draft. Analyst were unsure about which player would go first, but The Impact were apparently attracted to Wenger’s versatility. Kelyn Rowe went third to New England and Luis Silva from UCSB was chosen fourth by Toronto FC.

Akron’s Darren Mattocks is projected as the top pick in many MLS Mock Drafts, and for good reason. The sophomore from Jamaica has put together two sensational seasons for the Zips and looks to be a special player on the professional level for many years to come.

Akron Head Coach Caleb Porter on Mattocks:

“I’ve been trying to identify talent for 12 years and you start to get good enough where it doesn’t take you long. If you’ve got a special one, you get that feeling in your gut and you know immediately. he looked like a thoroughbred racehorse. The first time I saw him take off and the first time I saw him touch the ball, I was like, ‘This guy is the real deal.'”

“I wouldn’t trade that kid for anyone in the country. He is electric and he is a handful.”
