Dude, what happened last night?

Here’s what happened: The men’s NCAA first round kicked off and there were 13 one-goal games. Yes, 13! (That’s including the three matches that went into PKs).

Here are a few of the many highlights from last night:

– Charlotte outlasted UAB 3-2 in the video above.

– Syracuse upset No. 18 Cornell on a goal from Lars Muller.

– Xavier beat Kentucky on the goal below.

– UMBC took out Old Dominion in the highlights below.

Oh, and we can’t forget about the greatest highlight off all after the jump.

This is Part Two of our NCAA Men’s Tournament first-round predictions, based solely on team photos. Let’s do it.

UAB vs. Charlotte: Want to see a telling UAB photo? How about THIS. Yeah, they’re hosting the frickin’ Cup.

WINNER: UAB

Syracuse vs. Cornell: This was an easy call, and not just because Cornell’s backline looks like they’re all 8-foot-5. Check out the Orange (page 3), front row, second to last from the left. He looks a little too anxious for me. His hands are folded like a child waiting to hear their favorite story. All it takes is one, people.

WINNER: Cornell

Florida Gulf Coast vs. USF: One word: HAIR. Lots of it. I like it.

WINNER: Florida Gulf Coast

San Diego vs. Cal State Northridge: I hate to punish a program for their lavish campus, but if MTV ever came out with a Campus Cribs show, the Toreros would be hosting. Is that a balcony in the background?

WINNER: Cal State Northridge

See the final four matches after the jump.

If you’ve ever participated in, or even seen a soccer training then you’re probably familiar with a one-touch drill. You know, where each player can only make one touch on the ball before sending it away … you know, kind of like what Farleigh Dickinson did in the heat of a match!

Several coaches just cried a man tear of joy after watching this video – it’s straight from the ‘textbook soccer’ handbook.  The defending UAB never stood a chance.

The New Mexico men will be sporting a new look Friday night when they host No. 39 UAB. The Lobos are celebrating Spanish Themed Night by rocking special custom made uniforms (above) that feature a new color scheme and recognize the program’s conference title and NCAA appearance years.

Love this idea and need more of it. I hereby suggest that all college programs have one special night per year where they completely invent a new uniform around a unique occasion.

How about what college football does with their random Pro Combat Series? You know, when Michigan State suits up like THIS and the LSU Tigers look like THIS. It’s time college soccer joined the party.

All in favor say ‘aye’.

As always, there are a ton of great college games this weekend. Here are the ones that intrigue me most on Friday night.

WOMEN

No. 1 Florida State vs. No. 16 Florida. It’s a rivalry game, and we tend to like rivalry games. Plus, the Seminoles are the new standard-bearer in women’s soccer which is kind of weird because I can’t remember the last time Stanford wasn’t ranked No. 1 (I think Varsity Blues had just hit theaters) … anyway, these teams have split their last eight regular season meetings and the match will be aired on ESPN3.

No. 2 Stanford vs. No. 7 Boston College. Speaking of Stanford … with the No.1 ranking gone, will there be a hangover or are they over it?

Seton Hall vs. Deleware. Don’t sleep on the Pirates, so far their record is perfect-0 … meaning, they haven’t lost or allowed a goal in their four matches … meaning, that’s pretty darn good.

See key matchups on the men’s side after the jump.
