#17 Flagler edges FMU with second-half goals
FLORENCE, SC – A pesky Francis Marion University squad held 17th-ranked Flagler College scoreless over the first 47 minutes, but the Saints tallied three scores in the second half to claim a 3-0 Peach Belt Conference win, Wednesday night (Oct. 25) in women’s soccer action.
Francis Marion ends its 2017 season with a 5-9-0 record, a four-win improvement over the 2016 campaign.
Flagler (13-1-2) took a 1-0 lead on a penalty kick by Charlene Nowotny at the 47:15 mark. The Saints added insurance scores in the 77th and 83rd minutes.
Flagler outshot the Patriots 18-8 and held a 10-5 advantage in corner kicks. FMU junior goalkeeper Janine Gordon recorded a career-high nine saves, while Flagler’s Sarah-Lisa Dubel made seven stops en route to her fifth complete-match shutout.
FMU registered three shots on frame in the opening half that forced saves by Dubel. Freshman forward Kylie McElroy had two shots from inside the penalty area in the 12th and 45th minutes, while freshman Megan Misuraca cranked a 25-yard shot in the 32nd minute.
