Alcantara MAAC Defensive Player Of The Week
November 12, 2017
EDISON, NJ – Sophomore goalkeeper Juan Alcantara has been named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's soccer Defensive Player of the Week. The Lima, Peru native recorded four saves and registered two shutouts over the past week against Quinnipiac and Fairfield.
On Wednesday, Oct. 11, the Gaels took down Quinnipiac in Hamden, CT by a final score of 1-0. Alcantara made junior Killian Colombie's goal stand as the game-winner with three saves over the course of 90 minutes. On Saturday, Oct. 14, Alcantara made one save as part of a dominant defensive effort in a 0-0 draw against Fairfield.
Stretching over Iona's last three games, Alcantara and the Maroon & Gold defense has not allowed a goal in over 300 minutes. The Gaels are 2-0-1 over the trio of games.
It is the first time that Alcantara has won the award. Junior Kellar Sirstins earned the recognition earlier this season following back-to-back strong goaltending performances against nationally ranked UConn and Old Dominion.
The Maroon & Gold return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 18 in Jersey City, NJ against Saint Peter's. Kickoff scheduled for 1 PM.
