Bakersfield Shutouts Sacramento State
SACRAMENTO, Calif.--Bakersfield (1-1) posted its fourth consecutive shutout victory over Sacramento State (1-1) 3-0 Friday night in the first match of the Copa de Causeway Tournament at Sac State.
Joe Masumiya (R-Jr., Lakewood, Calif., Lakewood HS) opened the scoring with a blast from the top of the box in the 27th minute. Freshman Giovanni Godoy (Watsonville, Calif., Watsonville HS) recorded his first career goal when he took a breakaway pass from Mario Ortiz (Fr., Los Angeles, Calif., Leuzinger HS) and beat Hornets' goalie Cesar Castillo to the right post. Eduardo Caldaza (So., S. Los Angeles, Calif., Roosevelt HS) scored in the 78th minute when he converted a Lucas Dall'Orso (Jr., Orange County, Calif., JSerra Catholic HS) crossing pass.
CSUB goalie Anthony Perez (R-So., Fontana, Calif., Bloomington HS) earned his first career victory. Perez made saves on the four Sac State shots on goal (the Hornets outshot Bakersfield 17-16) and turned away a Sac State penalty kick in the 84th minute.
"It was an excellent performance on the road," said Roadrunner head coach Simon Tobin. "Sac State was very successful in the Big West last year and they are always a tough opponent. "We played good soccer and got some superb performances from our freshman."
Sac State has not scored against Bakersfield since the 3:58 mark of overtime in the 2010 MPSF Championship game in which the Hornets defeated the Roadrunners 2-1. The 'Runners have outscored Sac State 14-0 since 2011.
Bakersfield continues play in the Copa de Causeway Sunday at 5 p.m. at UC Davis.
