NEW YORK, N.Y. - The final statistics were pretty even. The number of quality scoring chances were close. The difference in Yale’s season opener with Fordham on Friday was the Rams capitalized on their opportunities. The result was a 2-0 victory for Fordham at Jack Coffey Field.

The Bulldogs outshot the Rams 9-6 and had a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks.

“There were a lot of bright moments,” said Yale head coach Brian Tompkins. “I thought we were dynamic and dangerous. We got behind their defense fairly often. We just have to have a sharper finish.”

The Rams, who were playing their third game of the season, scored first at 6:24 on a goal from Ryan Walsh.

“That was their first real attack of the game,” Tompkins said.

Ryan Cupolo added an insurance goal midway through the second half.

“We didn’t clear a free kick so that was disappointing,” Tompkins said.

The Bulldogs had six corner kicks but couldn’t capitalize.

Three newcomers saw action for Yale. Freshman Henry Albrecht started, while sophomore Henos Musie, a transfer from Chalmers University in Gothenburg, Sweden, and freshman Cameron Kirdzik each came off the bench.

The Bulldogs are back in action on Tuesday at Sacred Heart.
