Bulldogs Shutout Sac State 2-0
The Fresno State women's soccer team defeated Sacramento State 2-0 Sunday afternoon in Bulldog Stadium. It was the team's fourth shutout of the season and eighth straight win over the Hornets at home.
Junior Callie Hancock and sophomore Morgan Castain led the Bulldogs offense with a goal each. Sophomores Tara Boynton and Lauren Lindstrom each picked up their first assists of the season.
The Bulldogs opened scoring in the 16th minute. Castain took a pass from Boynton past a defender and sent the shot in low across Sac State's goalkeeper, Savannah Abercrombie. The goal marked Castain's fourth this season, third in the last two matches.
Ten minutes later, Hancock closed out scoring on a long pass from Lindstrom. After shaking her defender inside the box, Hancock chipped it in over Abercrombie for her third goal of the season,
Fresno State (3-2-1) outshot the Hornets 16-12, eight to four on goal. The Bulldogs finished with a season high nine corner kicks to Sac State's one. Abercrombie tallied a game-high six saves for Sac State (1-5-0).
The Bulldogs now get ready to face No. 4 UCLA on the road next Sunday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. The Bruins lead the series 4-0 all-time between the programs. The two teams have not met since 2008.
