Cardinals drop opener to Edgewood

WINONA, Minn. — The season opener didn't go quite the way Saint Mary's University women's soccer coach Neil Cassidy was hoping, as Edgewood came into Ochrymowycz Field Friday evening and left with a 3-0 nonconference win over the Cardinals.
Edgewood, which reached the Northern Athletics Conference Tournament a year ago, got on the board in the game's 15th minute, as Kristina Santaga beat SMU goalkeeper Miranda Halling (Rochester, Minn.) with the first of her two goals on the night.
Clinging to that 1-0 lead at halftime, Edgewood put the game out of reach early in the second half, scoring twice in the first five minutes to push its lead to 3-0.
Halling finished with two saves in goal for the Cardinals, while Kristi Fisch and Tori Fortney shared the goalkeeper duties for Edgewood, combining on a three-save shutout.
The Cardinals (0-1 overall) are back in action on Sunday, traveling to Dubuque, Iowa for a nonconference game against Loras.
