Liberty midfielder Jovanni Chavez has been named the Big South Men's Soccer Attacking Player of the Week for games played Aug. 29-Sept. 4.

Chavez, a sophomore from Longmont, Colo., started the week with three goals and an assist in Liberty's 5-2 win over VMI in its first road game of the 2016, last Tuesday. With seven points in the contest, Chavez became the first Flame to record seven points in a match since Darren Amoo, who posted eight points on four goals in a 7-0 Liberty win over Southern Virginia on Oct. 22, 2010. He also became the first Flame to score three goals in a game since Sept. 20, 2011, when Travis Joseph had three markers in a 9-0 win over Southern Virginia.

Chavez gave Liberty a 1-0 advantage after one half of play and scored the Flames' second goal of the game during the 50th minute in the road win.

In his team's second game of the week, Chavez was in Liberty's starting 11 and played 78 minutes for the Flames, providing solid play, Friday evening at Osborne Stadium. Liberty, who played a man down during the final 38 minutes, fell to William & Mary, dropping to 2-1 on the year.

Chavez and the Flames are scheduled to play the USC Upstate Spartans, this afternoon in Spartanburg, S.C. Kickoff at County University Stadium is set for 4 p.m.
