Clan drop a 3-1 decision to CWU
Burnaby, BC – The Simon Fraser University Clan women's soccer team returned to Terry Fox Field on Thursday evening and suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of the Central Washington Wildcats.
Freshman goalkeeper Amanda Gilliland (Delta, BC) was strong in net once again, making several big saves among the seven she made in the game.
In the first half, the Clan controlled the play, taking it to CWU but they could not find the back of the net.
Central Washington then took the momentum, opening the scoring in the 34th minute when off a cross, Kelsey Villegas found the back of the net from the six yard box to make it 1-0.
In the 54th minute, SFU caught a break when a defensive miscue by the Wildcats resulted in an own goal, tying the game, 1-1.
CWU made up for their mistake though when Nicole Laughlin scored in the 65th minute to break the deadlock and give CWU a 2-1.
That goal would stand up as the game winner as Central Washington added one more to take the victory, 3-1.
With the loss, SFU's record falls to 1-5 on the season, 0-3 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.
SFU will now hit the road for a border battle against the Western Washington Vikings when the Clan travel to Bellingham, WA on Sunday for a 6:00 p.m. kickoff.
