Colby Blanks Southern Maine 3-0

            WATERVILLE, Maine -- Junior goalkeeper Peter Quayle (Lincoln, Mass./Rivers School) stopped five shots and the Colby College men’s soccer team got goals from three players en route to a 3-0 non-conference victory over the University of Southern Maine Tuesday afternoon.

            The win lifts the Mules overall mark to 2-3 while the Huskies drop to 0-8-1.

            Quayle earned his second win of the season against no losses, and first shutout, by stopping three USM shots in the opening 45 minutes, and two more in the second half.

            The Mules took the lead for good in the 30th minute when senior Chris Pratt (Wellesley, Mass./Noble & Greenough) headed home a corner kick taken by sophomore Dan Vogel (Dedham, Mass./Noble & Greenough) for his first goal of the season.

            Colby increased its advantage to 2-0 late in the half as junior Keith Chernin (Brookline, Mass.) slipped a shot past USM freshman goalkeeper Adam Verreault (Poland, Maine) for his first goal.

            The home side tallied the only marker of the second half in the 67th minute when sophomore Yinka Onayemi (Crete, Ill./Illinois Math & Science) took the ball down and fired a shot past freshman Matt Willis (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle).  The goal was the first of the season for Onayemi.

            Colby finished the match with a 24-12 advantage in shots and a 5-0 margin in corner kicks.  Verreault made four saves in the first half for USM.  Willis, who came on after halftime to replace Verreault in the Huskies’ goal, registered six saves in the second half.

            Southern Maine is back in action on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) hosting Little East Conference foe Plymouth State University.  Colby travels to Middlebury College for a NESCAC game on Saturday (12:00 p.m.).
