Henderson scores in a 4-1 loss at GC
MILLIDGEVILLE, GA – Georgia College tallied three goals in the second half to snap a 1-1 deadlock on Wednesday evening (Oct. 18) as the Bobcats pulled away from upset-minded Francis Marion University for a 4-1 win in Peach Belt Conference women’s soccer action.
FMU (4-8-0, 1-7-0) will host Georgia Southwestern State University on Saturday at 5 p.m. as the Patriots will be honoring their seniors prior to kick off on Senior Day. The Bobcats improve to 8-5-0 overall and 4-3-0 in the PBC.
Georgia College junior Amanda Bartholomew started the scoring with a shot off the fingertips of Patriots’ sophomore goalkeeper Micahla Kitchen in the 24th minute, giving the Bobcats a 1-0 lead.
The Patriots tied the score 1-1 at the 34:59 mark after a header shot was put into the back of the net by senior Breanna Henderson. The header came off a free kick taken by freshman Dayle McEwen. This was Henderson’s second goal of the season, both coming in the last two matches on headers.
FMU recorded two shots in the opening minutes of the second stanza, including one by sophomore Sierra Cartano that forced a save by Georgia College junior goalkeeper Ashlee Graham at the 47:27 mark. However, GC also came out strong in the second half, scoring three goals on 14 shots. The goals were scored by junior Sofia Lekas (56:49), Bartholomew (76:59), and freshman Cassie Balzano (79:16).
Kitchen collected 10 saves, matching a career high, while Graham had four.
The Bobcats outshot Francis Marion 28-10, while both teams took two corner kicks. Henderson led FMU with three shots.
