FREDONIA, NY—Houghton (2-0-1) scored the game's only goal in the sixth minute and then held off Buffalo State (1-1-1) for a 1-0 victory in the opening game of the Fredonia Clarion Inn Classic.
Buffalo State took control of the game in the second half, hemming the Highlanders on their own half of the field for significant periods of time, but could not find the back of the net. The Bengals outshot Houghton 12-9 for the game, including 10-4 in the second frame.
Freshman Robby Kuhnle (Pleasant Valley/Arlington) had two saves in goal for Buffalo State.
Buffalo State will face Mt. St. Mary tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. in Fredonia.
