Late Penalty Kick Sinks Saints
Conor Goepel scored on a penalty kick with less than seven minutes remaining in regulation as Cornell handed Siena Soccer a tough 1-0 defeat at the Fourth Annual CU Inaria Classic in Ithaca. Two-time defending MAAC Defensive Player of the Week Josh Weiss made two saves for the Saints.
Siena (5-2) overcame a slow start offensively and threatened to strike first in the second half. After being held without a shot for nearly the first 28 minutes, the Saints took 12 shots and attempted all six of the contest’s corners in the second half.
But Siena was only able to put two of its 14 total shots on target, leaving the door open for Cornell (3-2-1). With just 6:59 remaining in regulation, the Big Red’s Sebastian Scales drew the match-changing foul in the box, setting up Goepel for the ensuing decisive penalty kick.
Junior Rosero led the Saints with four shots and Danilo Markovic attempted two, including a 52nd minute header off a Uros Antic corner that hit the post.
Zach Zagorski made two saves to post the shutout for the three-time defending CU Inaria Classic Champions Cornell which improved to 6-0 all-time in the tournament that they co-host with Colgate.
The Saints will look to bounce back Sunday when they head to Hamilton, N.Y. to face the tournament co-host Red Raiders at 2 p.m.
