Manhattan Hands Saints Unlucky Defeat
Siena Women’s Soccer held decisive edges in shots (17-5), shots on goal (7-2) and corner kicks (9-4), but it was Sam Washuk’s goal in the 66th minute that proved to be the difference as Manhattan defeated the Saints 1-0 in Riverdale.
Siena (5-3-2, 1-1) controlled play throughout, but was unable to cash in. Meanwhile Manhattan (6-3, 2-0) took advantage on one of their few chances when Washuk scored off a Colleen Kavanagh corner for the lone goal of the match.
Kristen Skoniezcny made seven saves to post the clean sheet for the Jaspers which won for just the sixth time in 26 all-time meetings between the programs.
Senior goalkeeper Liz Rogan made one save for a Siena defense that was impressive in defeat. The Saints stymied the potent Jaspers’ offense for the most part and held the MAAC’s leading scorer Erica Modena without a shot.
Sophomore midfielder Madison Vasquez paced the Saints offensively with five shots (three shots on goal) including a 30th minute strike that Skonieczny made a sprawling save on to keep the match scoreless. Sophomore midfielder Michele Tremblay added four shots.
The Saints return to action Wednesday for a 4 p.m. showdown at Niagara.
