MONMOUTH DEFEATS BRYANT 1-0
September 23, 2012
WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - Monmouth University freshman Brianne Boyle (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan) recorded her first career goal in the Hawks' 1-0 victory over Bryant University in Northeast Conference action on Sunday afternoon, on The Great Lawn.
Monmouth, which has gone unbeaten in its last five matches (4-0-1), improves to 5-4-1 on the season, and 2-0 in the NEC. Bryant falls to 6-5 overall and 1-1 in league play.
"Today we got a great goal from Bri Boyle," stated head coach Krissy Turner, whose Hawks have started the NEC campaign unbeaten after two matches for the sixth straight year. "And to get another shutout is terrific."
After a scoreless opening half, which saw junior Karly Tolentino (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Odyssey Academy) rocket a shot off the cross bar, Monmouth notched the decisive goal on Boyle's high shot from the left side past Bryant goalkeeper Lauren Viverito in the 73rd minute.
Monmouth, which outshot the Bulldogs 17-4 in the match, including 9-2 in the second half, registered its third clean sheet in the last four games. Viverito made three saves for Bryant, while Hawks' sophomore Jocelyn McCoy (Crofton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) made no saves.
The Hawks also held a 5-4 edge in corner kick opportunities.
Monmouth returns to action on Friday night, when the Hawks host Robert Morris in Northeast Conference action on The Great Lawn at 7:00 p.m. Friday night will also be Christie Rampone Recognition night, honoring the Monmouth alum and four-time United States Olympian.
