New Haven Upsets No. 14 Mercy
WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Marisa Garcia (Babylon, N.Y./Babylon) scored two goals as the University of New Haven women's soccer team upended the nationally ranked No. 14 Mercy Mavericks 3-1 at Kayo Field on Saturday evening.
With the victory, New Haven is now 2-0-0 on the season while the Mavericks fall to 0-1-0.
The win marked the first for the Chargers against a ranked opponent since Sept. 6, 2012 when they downed No. 23 Dowling 2-0.
Sierra Stein (Sherman, Conn./Immaculate) opened the scoring in the 12th minute when she drove a ball past the keeper after taking a through ball from Carlie Schecht (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) for a 1-0 New Haven edge. The lead was extended in the 37th minute when, off a rebound from a blocked shot, Marisa Garcia (Babylon, N.Y./Babylon) sent a ball into the lower right corner of the net to make it 2-0.
The Chargers salted the match away in the 70th minute. After a save by Deandra Nash (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park), the keeper punted the ball into the Mercy end of the field. Following a bounce, Danielle Widmann (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) flicked the ball forward with a header before Garcia touched it past the keeper for her second goal of the match and a 3-0 lead.
For the match, New Haven outshot Mercy 15-12 and held a 9-8 advantage in attempts on net.
Next, the Chargers take to the road for the first time this season as they travel to Dowling on Wednesday, Sept. 9 for a 4:00 p.m. contest.
