Pivirotto Picks Up 100th Career Win
Veteran University of Scranton men’s soccer coach Matt Pivirotto recorded the 100th victory of his coaching career Saturday evening.
Pivirotto reached the coveted plateau when the Royals defeated the Merchant Marine Academy, 2-1, in Kings Point, New York, to improve to 8-0-1 overall and 2-0 in the Landmark Conference. Scranton is currently ranked ninth in the Mid-Atlantic region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and faces a key Landmark Conference game this Saturday, October 6, when it takes on Susquehanna University, ranked second in the Mid-Atlantic and 16th nationally, in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania, at 2:30 p.m.
A native of Williamsport, Pennsylvania, and a former standout at Bishop Neumann High School and Lycoming College, Pivirotto took over as head coach of the Royals in 1999 and recorded his first win in his first match, a 1-0 victory over Ursinus College at Fitzpatrick Field. He has led the Royals to six conference postseason tournament appearances—three in Scranton’s previous affiliation in the Freedom Conference and three in its current affiliation with the Landmark Conference—along with a 12-win season in 2009 and 11 victories in 2006.
Individually, 23 of his players to date have earned all-conference recognition while seven—Eric Kunzinger (2000), Jeremy Basedow (2002), Tim Logan (2006, 2007, 2008), Bill McGuiness (2011), John Postel (2008), Gary Racich (2006), Ray Straccia (2009)—have been named all-regional by the NSCAA.
He is currently second all-time in wins (100) and third in winning percentage (.463) in Scranton history.
