Royals Battle to Scoreless Tie at Ithaca
ITHACA, N.Y. – The University of Scranton men’s soccer team had a handful of scoring chances in its match against Ithaca College on Tuesday afternoon, but ultimately settled for a 0-0 tie in double overtime against the Bombers at Carp Wood Field.
The tie ends the Royals’ winning streak dating back to last season at eight, but their unbeaten start remains intact. At 7-0-1, Scranton is enjoying its longest unbeaten run to open a season since the Royals went 20-0 to open the 1987 season, a span of 25 years. It also matches the program’s third-longest unbeaten run to start a season. The Royals opened the 1986 season at 16-0 and the 1980 season at 8-0.
Scranton held a 16-11 advantage in shots, including 12-7 in regulation. Senior midfielder Bill McGuiness (Forty Fort, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) had a team-high six shots.
Senior goalkeeper James Dillon (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) made three saves, one in the first overtime and two in the second, for his fourth shutout of the season and fifth of his career.
The Royals had nine corner kicks to just three for Ithaca.
For the Bombers (3-1-4), freshman goalkeeper Kenny Chapman (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) made six saves, including three in the first overtime.
Scranton returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 29, when it travels to Kings Point, N.Y. to face Merchant Marine Academy in a Landmark Conference match at 6 p.m.
