HUNTINGDON, Pa. – The University of Scranton men’s soccer team kept sending shots toward the Juniata goal on Saturday, 19 of them in all. But none found the back of the net and it proved costly when the Eagles scored late in overtime to hand the Royals a 1-0 defeat in the Landmark Conference opener for both teams at Winton Hill Field.

The loss was the first of the season for Scranton (5-1-3, 0-1 Landmark), snapping an eight-match unbeaten streak. It also marked the Royals’ first loss to Juniata since the teams joined the Landmark Conference in 2007, ending a string of six straight wins over the Eagles.

Juniata (9-1-1, 1-0 Landmark) won it at the 98:19 mark when junior midfielder Robby Higgins (Middletown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) deposited a shot in the left corner. It was the Eagles’ only shot of overtime and their 10th of the match, only two of which were on goal.

The Royals had four corner kicks to Juniata’s three, and outshot the Eagles in all three periods. Senior midfielder Bill McGuiness (Forty Fort, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) led Scranton with four shots as 10 different players had at least one.

Scranton is back in action on Saturday, Oct. 5, when they travel to Towson, Md. to take on Goucher in a Landmark Conference match at 3:30 p.m.
