COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Fort Lewis College goalkeeper Ryan Wirth was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season, RMAC Assistant Commissioner Sarah Meier announced today. He previously received the distinction on Sept. 27.

Wirth, a 5-foot-10, 175-lb. senior from Bayfield High School, has recorded eight shutouts in 12 games in 2011 after he posted back-to-back 1-0 blankings of then-No. 14 Metro State and UC-Colorado Springs last weekend. He owns a 0.333 goals against average thus far in 2011, tops in NCAA Division II. He also ranks third in the nation in save percentage at .889.

“It’s great to see Ryan get recognition from the RMAC again for all of the clean sheets he’s putting up,” said third-year FLC head coach Oige Kennedy. “He’s starting to get some national recognition as well. He certainly deserves all of the limelight and attention he’s getting this year.”

Wirth redshirted in 2007 and ’08 before serving as backup to All-American Zane Wells on FLC’s 2009 NCAA Division II national championship team. He split time with two other keepers in 2010 before cementing down the starting job in the season’s final weeks. His junior campaign culminated with a nod on the RMAC All-Tournament team.

No. 1 Fort Lewis hits the road for a match at Colorado Mesa (3-9-1, 3-6-0) at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Walker Field. The Skyhawks then play a pair of home matches this weekend. FLC hosts No. 18 Metro State (7-4-1, 5-3-0) at 3:30 p.m. Friday and Regis (7-2-1, 4-2-1) at 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
