Skyhawks Down Mines On Overtime Winner, 2-1
GOLDEN – Colorado School of Mines men's soccer fell just short in the battle of RMAC postseason qualifiers on Friday evening as visiting Fort Lewis denied the Orediggers, 1-0, in overtime at CSM Soccer Stadium.
Fort Lewis (10-7, 8-5 RMAC) initiated the scoring in the 31st minute as Luke Lawrence put away a point blank rebound off an attempt by Alberto Capdepon.
The Orediggers evened play at 1-1 at 55:05; freshman Nikolaus Grotz converted at the penalty stipe with his team-leading seventh goal of the season.
FLC had four of its 28 shots in the extra 10:00, capped by the decisive straight-on score with 1:43 remaining from Lawrence by way of brother Zac Lawrence.
The Skyhawks placed 15 tries on goal, while Mines (10-7, 8-5 RMAC) sent nine of its 18 shots to frame, paced by Grotz and junior Ryan Leach with two apiece.
Senior Matthew Alemann, juniors Richard Garvey, Joe Haines and Chayce Moniz, and freshman Preston Migaki each added one.
Sophomore Collin Hall (5-5) amassed a career-best 12 saves – tied for most among RMAC keepers in 2014 – in the loss.
The men host Adams State at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the regular season finale in Golden.
Situated in a three-way tie for third in conference standings, Mines can claim the tournament's No. 2 seed and a first-round bye with a win as well as a loss by Regis (12-4, 9-4 RMAC) against NSCAA No. 11 Colorado Mesa and a loss or tie by Colorado Colorado Springs (9-7-1, 8-5 RMAC) to Colorado State-Pueblo.
