The U.S. U20 Women’s National Team is facing one of the most difficult challenges that any youth national team has seen in some time. The timing of the CONCACAF Championship has made life difficult on U20 WNT head coach Michelle French. The event kicks off from Honduras in December, which means that top age group-eligible players may not be available due to commitments with their college teams during that time.
French, U.S. U17 WNT head coach B.J. Snow, and the rest of the U.S. soccer coaching and scouting network have been aware of this possibility for some time. Beginning in August, French has opened the door to some of the top players from the U17 side and they have impressed in each camp so far. French now faces the dilemma of keeping the young guns in the mix or waiting to see if some of the older, college players become available.
It seems likely that French will lean on the players that she took to Spain last month, which included five players from the U17 group. Here is a scouting report on those five U17 WNT-eligible players who could be feature for the U20s in Honduras during the CONCACAF Championship in December.
