EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Brad Vorv’s chip shot 6:40 into the first overtime period lifted visiting Virginia Tech to a 1-0 win over SIUE in the men’s soccer opener Friday at Korte Stadium. 

Vorv’s shot came from 25 yards away and from the left. Vorv took a pass out wide from midfielder Niels Kirch before catching SIUE goalkeeper Kent Kobernus off his line and finding the back of the net - sending the opening night crowd of 871 home disappointed.

Kobernus made two saves and had made numerous plays away from the goal during the game.

SIUE (0-1) controlled the majority of the game, holding the advantage in total shots 16-8, including holding a 10-4 edge in the second half. Jabari Danzy and Garet Christianson each had four shots. Christianson led all players with three shots on target. Andrew Kendall-Moullin, Christian Voelsky, and Paul Scheipeter had two shots apiece.

Freshman goalkeeper Ben Lundgaard proved up to the task, making seven saves and earning the shutout in his first career regular season game for Virginia Tech (1-0). Lundgaard made several sliding plays away from goal to keep the SIUE offense in check.

The Cougars continue their season-opening home stand with a 1 p.m. game Sunday against Tulsa.
