Warhawks Top Ripon for Third Straight Win
John Gottwald (South Milwaukee/South Milwaukee) recorded two goals for the UW-Whitewater men's soccer team en route to a 5-0 victory over Ripon College Thursday at Prairie Field in Ripon. The win is the third in a row for UW-W as they improve to 7-4-2 this season. The Red Hawks drop to 5-8-1.
It didn't take long for UW-W to get on the board. Gottwald netted his first goal at 9:02 with an assist by Logan Fye (Rockford, IL/Winnebago). The Warhawks kept the pressure on and increased their lead to 2-0 six shots later when Gottwald scored again, this time on an assist from Xander Lien (Pewaukee/Arrowhead).
Michael Salm (Grafton/Grafton) made it 3-0 in favor of UW-W just before halftime as he scored an unassisted goal in the 41st minute. The goal is Salm's second goal of the season.
After halftime the Warhawks padded their lead with a goal by Lien at 47:47, and a goal by Jonathon Fischer (Hartland/Arrowhead) at 53:53, to make it 5-0, the final score of the game.
Matt Mikesell (Waukesha/Kettle Moraine) started in goal for the Warhawks, opposite his brother, Daniel Mikesell, the goalkeeper for Ripon. Matt played just the first half and earned the win but did not make any saves. Andrew Bitta (Green Oaks, IL/Libertyville) played the second half in goal for UW-W and also did not have to make any saves.
The Warhawks outshot the Red Hawks 13-4 and held the advantage in corner kicks 5-2.
UW-W will play again on Sunday, November 21 when they host the University of Chicago in a match beginning at 1 pm at Fiskum Field.
