Waynesburg Hands Panthers First Loss of the Season
The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women’s soccer team suffered its first loss of the season Tuesday night, falling to Waynesburg 2-1 in double-overtime.
The Panthers opened the scoring in the 25th minute when Emily Mitchell converted a header on a corner kick from Andrea Gundlach. It was Mitchell’s second goal of the year. The score would remain that way until midway through the second when Waynesburg’s Kirsten Miller took a long cross-field pass and was able to score, tying the game at one.
Alisa Cornell kept the Panthers in the game with eight second-half saves, and eventually the contest would move to overtime. Each team got a pair of shots off in the first 10 minutes of extra time but neither squad could convert. Seconds into double-overtime, Courtney Ebersole scored the game-winner on a break-away.
The Jackets dominated the stats, outshooting Pitt-Bradford 24-10, and held a 7-4 advantage on corner kicks. Cornell finished with a season-high 13 saves despite suffering the loss.
Pitt-Bradford drops to 5-1 on the season, and will play at Lycoming on Sunday at 3 p.m.
