HS: State, region rankings, April 16
The final week of high school play for the winter season has arrived, and yet at the same time winter weather has prevented one state from starting its spring season.
Texas will crown its final state champions this week, bringing to a close the 2017-2018 winter season. Meanwhile, North Dakota has yet to start spring play as the season has been further delayed by inclement weather.
The big news in winter season play last week was Wakeland (Frisco, Texas) girls knocking off defending state champion Highland Park (Dallas, Texas) to reach the state semifinals. Wakeland won the 5A crown in 2016 and Highland Park won in 2017. This marks the first time in four seasons that Highland Park has not reached the state final (as it played in the large school final in 2015 and 2016).
