HS: Weekend Wrap, region rankings, April 29
The last weekend of April marked the first weekend in 2019 without winter high school play, and it proved to be a pivotal weekend for many spring programs.
Georgia started postseason play -- and the first round was marked by few surprises.
In the Midwest, the Naperville Invitational and adidas Tournament of Champions were contested, both proving the strength and depth of Illinois girls soccer. At the Naperville Invitational, the top two girls teams in Illinois -- Barrington and St. Charles North -- reached the final, only to have that clash washed out by rain. The teams could meet in late May with a lot more than an inseason tourney title on the line. In Iowa, at the ToC, this year's event lacked the star-studded lineups of the past, yet Columbia (Ill.), Granite City (Ill.) and Olathe North (Kan.) won the bracket titles. The event exposed the Iowa programs this year as all of the regionally ranked Iowa teams lost to Illinois opponents.
On the boys side, Alaska, Utah and Washington have new state No. 1s this week, while new girls teams top the Arkansas, Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Missouri, North Dakota and Wisconsin rankings. The move in Michigan means a new FAB 50 No. 1 team when those rankings are released Tuesday.
