Fiebernitz thrives on set pieces with her deadly left foot

It’s not the size of the girl in the fight, but the size of the fight in the girl.

For what it’s worth, Mary-Kathryn Fiebernitz is a very average 5-foot-6 (5-7 tops), but yet she manages to dominate the air like no Michigan Hawks player on her U17 team. It’s the tenacity and approach she takes to competing that belies her stature.

“She is the best ball winner we have period – on the ground or in the air,” said Wolves coach Adil Salmoni. “It’s all about the mentality. We have taller girls who don’t come close to attacking the ball in the air the way she does. It’s just the way she plays.”

Fiebernitz is a very important piece of a Michigan Hawks group that has a lot of potential. With teammates like Melanie Pickert, Ariana Donahue, Alex Heffron, Taylore Peterson and Lisa Vogel, Fiebernitz and the Hawks have a good mix of experienced and young talent.

The team captured its Midwest Regional Premier League division and is hoping to keep momentum through the winter and into the postseason. The Hawks have been regional participants but have yet to make it beyond with this squad.

“This team has never had that opportunity to play into nationals, and this is the best chance,” Salmoni said. “In the past we haven’t been ready to battle teams that are coming in with their momentum but hopefully this year we’ll be prepared.”

Fiebernitz certainly will be. After transitioning from a midfielder to primarily a back last season she is fully comfortable. With her feel for the game, she’s able to roam as a center back or slide to a left back where she can use her strong left foot. It’s this lethal foot that makes her the Hawks’ best weapon on set plays.

Fiebernitz will attend Michigan State in 2011, the school that she’s always targeted. Her expected success at the next level is due, in part, to her versatility; she has played a lot of positions during her many years in the game and she’s sure to stand tall at any one of them.

Great Lakes’ Best

Fiebernitz is one of the few 2011s who set the standard for play but she isn’t the only. Sarah Killion is a very dynamic player along with national team pool player Olivia Brannon.

Emma Brown, having just moved from Mockingbird Valley (Louisville, Kentucky) Soccer Club to Lexington is a dangerous scorer who makes things happen. And don’t forget about Kelsey Smigel, a key component on Cleveland FCs national final appearing team.
