Cal men beat Air Force

September 29, 2009
BERKELEY – Forward Andrew Wiedeman scored two goals and fellow frontrunner Jeff Cosgriff collected two assists in a 3-0 victory for fourth-ranked California over Air Force in the Stanford Nike Classic on Sunday at Edwards Stadium. Junior midfielder Demitrius Omphroy also tallied a goal and an assist for the Golden Bears, who improved their record to 6-2-0. The Falcons evened their record to 3-3-1.

The Cardinal, with a 2-0 win over New Mexico earlier today in Stanford,
Calif., won its Stanford Nike Classic with a 2-0-0 record. Cal and New
Mexico each finished 1-1-0 and Air Force was winless (0-2-0) in the
tournament.

The Bears, rebounding from a 2-1 loss to New Mexico on Sept. 25 at
Stanford, outshot the Falcons, 17-6, and took a 1-0 lead in the ninth
minute, when some nice passing by Omphroy and Cosgriff set up Wiedeman for
his first goal. That marked the senior’s seventh goal of the season.

In the 26th minute, Cal earned a penalty kick after an Air Force foul in
the Bears’ box. Wiedeman took the penalty kick, but Mike Mauro made a nice
diving save on the blast. The junior quickly collected the ball after his
shot and lashed it past Mauro for a 2-0 Cal lead the Bears would take into
halftime.

Cal outshot the Falcons, 8-3, in the first half.

Cosgriff assisted on Omphroy’s goal in the 57th minute after his pass
deflected off a defender right to Omphroy, who scored past Mauro for what
would turn out to be the final 3-0 scoreline.

Bears freshman Robby Gogatz, getting the first start of his college
career, made one save and earned the shutout. Mauro made seven saves.

Cal opens Pac-10 Conference action when it hosts Stanford at 4 p.m. on
Friday, Oct. 2, at Edwards Stadium in Berkeley.
